Harboring illegal aliens brings one-year term

Harboring illegal aliens brings one-year term

    Updated: October 5, 2011, 6:57 AM

A Mexican man who helped his brother operate a chain of Mexican restaurants that employed illegal aliens has been sentenced to a year in prison by Chief U. S. District Judge William M. Skretny. He was convicted of harboring illegal aliens for commercial advantage, U. S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. reported. Javier Banda-Mireles, 38, who entered the U. S. illegally in 1991, was arrested in April 2008 with his brother, Simon, 50, and nine other restaurant managers, all of whom have been convicted.

He will face deportation after he serves his sentence.

Authorities said Banda-Mireles’ brother owned and operated several Mexican restaurants in Western New York, including El Caporal on Union Road in Cheektowaga, the Azteca Cantina in Dunkirk and Don Lorenzo’s in Allegany, plus others in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, employing from 25 to 100 illegal aliens between 2006 and 2008.
