ICE to make detention centers more humane

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials are preparing to roll out a series of changes at several privately owned immigration detention centers, including relaxing some security measures for low-risk detainees and offering art classes, bingo and continental breakfast on the weekends.

The changes, detailed in an internal ICE e-mail obtained by the Houston Chronicle, were welcomed by immigrant advocates who have been waiting for the Obama administration to deliver on a promise made in August to overhaul the nation's immigration detention system.

I used to work for a professional association that dealt with the penal system. I spoke to many wardens, sheriffs, and police and I don't remember any of them talking about hanging plants, bingo, dances, or other amenities and certainly NOT unmonitored phone lines. Also, how does ICE absolutely KNOW that these criminals are "harmless?" We don't know who any of them are because they use other identities and their true identity can't be known.

i agree that this is totally stupid and insane.

i think we have all seen the videos of what the inside looks like, and
though its costing us taxpayers more i would say since they are going to still be locked up in the area, that something a little more homey could be ok.
fresh carrot sticks? no problem with it since it will help people eat a little more healthy.

they better denide what low risk detainees means first before they do anything
