Sen. Sessions Exposes Disability Insurance Program's Preferential Treatment for Non-English Speakers
May 7, 2014Last week, Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama sent a letter to Carolyn Colvin, the Acting Commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The purpose of the letter was to inquire about why enrollment numbers for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) have skyrocketed and whether or not the agency is using an applicant’s inability to speak English as a determinative factor.
Did you know that while the total population of the United States increased by less than 10% from 2000 to 2010, but that applications for disability payments increased by a whopping 230%?
The original intent of the SSDI program was to provide replacement income to individuals unable to work due to a physical or mental impairment, but today, SSA has been approving disability payments for people who are unemployed but are not ill or injured.
The letter highlights the larger injustice:
“Individuals who allegedly cannot communicate in English can qualify for benefits five years earlier than those who can. If you cannot communicate in English, you can establish disability at the age of 45. Otherwise, you might be required to wait until the age of 50.”
The inability to speak English is certainly a disadvantage in the labor market, but it should not be equated to a disability. The Social Security Administration has a moral obligation to ensure that only those who are truly disabled or ill and cannot work are receiving disability benefits.
TAKE ACTION!

Now why if Spanish is the second official language would it also be treated as a disability? No incentive to learn English, and no incentive to assimilate in that scenario. Anyone else feeling as a foreigner in your birth land?

Since those who come here legally are required to know English, this is nothing but more catering to illegals. In many areas around the USA WE are required to speak Spanish in order to get hired for many jobs! No American citizen should be made to feel like a foreigner in their own Country! No illegal should be given special treatment above an American citizen! This makes me sick!
