Ontario won't pay for Trudeau's illegal immigration 'mess,' Ford says

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should pay for the “mess” he made when he encouraged people to cross the border illegally, the Doug Ford government says.
“This has resulted in a housing crisis and threats to the services that Ontario families depend on,” a spokesman for Ford said Thursday. “This mess was 100% the result of the federal government, and the federal government should foot 100% of the bills.”
Last year, Trudeau tweeted out a welcome to those fleeing persecution and war the day after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a ban on refugees from several Muslim countries.
Community and Social Services Minister Lisa MacLeod, who’s responsible for immigration issues, said the Ontario government will not pick up the tab for people who have since entered the country at illegal crossings.

“If (Trudeau) wants to welcome them in, that’s fine, but he should make sure that he’s paying for them,” MacLeod said. “It is not up to Mayor John Tory, nor is it up to Premier Doug Ford, to pay for the commitments made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau or any of his cabinet ministers.”

Asylum claims that should be turned around in 60 days are taking about 24 months, and Toronto and the province are absorbing the cost for services like shelter and social assistance, she said.
The Ford government has indicated it will withdraw from a joint asylum seeker support agreement that former premier Kathleen Wynne backed.

Trudeau met with Ford at Queen’s Park Thursday, where the pair discussed the issue.
“It didn’t seem to me that the premier was quite as aware of our international obligation to the U.N. Convention on refugees as he might have been, so I spent a little time explaining how the asylum-seeking system works and how our system is supposed to operate,” Trudeau said.
Canada evaluates asylum seekers to determine if they are fleeing persecution or terror, and sends home those who are economic migrants, he said.
The feds have also directed $11 million to Ontario to help with the additional costs related to what they term irregular migration.
Canadians are generally very supportive of immigration, Trudeau added.
The PM has a face-to-face with Tory Friday, who has raised concerns about the $65 million that municipal taxpayers have spent in the last two years trying to accommodate the surge in newcomers.
“Thousands of refugee claimants and asylum seekers are in Toronto’s shelter system — this includes 800 people, many who are children, who will need shelter after Aug. 9 when we can no longer use two college dormitories,” Tory said in a statement Thursday. “The City of Toronto has been clear that we need assistance to deal with unprecedented numbers of refugee claimants and asylum seekers.”
Following his meeting with Ford, Trudeau emphasized the need for all levels of government to work cooperatively.
But another fight is brewing over Ford’s decision to scrap the cap-and-trade program, in part to lower gas prices, putting him at odds with the federal government’s plan for carbon pricing across the country.
The move could cost Ontario hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding.
“We’ve been clear that the $1.4 billion Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund is only available to provinces and territories that are part of Canada’s clean growth and climate action plan,” Caroline Theriault, a spokesman for federal Energy and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna, said in an e-mail Thursday. “If Ontario drops out of Canada’s national climate plan, their allocation under that fund would move to other clean growth and climate action priorities. Ontario’s allocation under the Low Carbon Economy Fund is $419.9 million.”
