The state House of Representatives approved a resolution honoring Arizona for its controversial immigration law over the objection of foes who argued Tennessee should not involve itself in another state's fight.

Lawmakers voted 67-27 in favor of a measure brought by state Rep. Joe Carr, R-Lascassas, that commended Arizona for having "the initiative and the courage . . . to protect their citizens and the borders of our great nation" by adopting a state law that lets police question people they suspect of being in the country illegally.

The resolution does nothing to change Tennessee law, but it was needed to correct mischaracterizations of the law, Carr said.

"Quite honestly, it's been much maligned and misinterpreted," Carr said.

The Arizona law requires authorities to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're in the country illegally.

The vote came after a 45-minute debate. Most of the speeches were from opponents who questioned the wisdom of involving Tennessee in the debate.

Critics said the resolution distracts from more important issues such as the state budget and cleanup from this month's flood.

The resolution also threatens Tennessee's tourism and convention business if, as in Arizona, people start to avoid the state, they added.

"Now we're fixing to co-sign onto their trouble, as if we don't have enough of our own to do," said Rep. G.A. Hardaway, D-Memphis. "We don't need to be getting in the middle of anybody else's mess, period."

    Concerns raised
Carr told lawmakers that the Arizona bill is weaker than federal illegal immigration laws, and he said the bill specifically bans racial profiling.

But Gregg Ramos, a Nashville attorney who was born in Arizona and still has family in that state, said the law sanctions the actions of police officers who already profile Hispanics in immigration sweeps.

"I'm especially concerned that U.S. citizens who were born and raised in Arizona, that they are going to be subject to this," he said after watching the vote from the visitors' gallery. "The problem with this law is the net is cast way too wide."

Among local lawmakers, Reps. Brenda Gilmore, Sherry Jones, Gary Moore, Gary Odom, Mary Pruitt, Janis Baird Sontany, Mike Stewart and Mike Turner voted against the resolution. Reps. Stratton Bone and Kent Coleman abstained.

The resolution now heads for a Senate vote.
