The U.S. population grew at its slowest rate in years in 2013, according to the latest Census Bureau estimates Monday that show recent trends in immigration and lower birth rates continue to hold down growth.
The country added just 2.255 million new people between July 1, 2012, and July 1, 2013 — a smaller increase than any year since since the 1980s, when the country was only about three-quarters of its current population.
North Dakota, powered by a dramatic energy boom, and the District of Columbia, which thanks to the federal government has proved to be recession-proof, led the way in growth, expanding 3.1 percent and 2 percent, respectively, according to the Census Bureau statistics.
West Virginia and Maine, meanwhile, both saw their populations drop slightly.

They love to say we need high immigration to make sure we have enough young to provide for the old because Americans have such small families. But a large part of small families is because many are uncertain of their financial future because the wages have been on a downward trend for half a decade while inflation is far higher. Costs of healthcare for families and kids, poor schools, and people not wanting to deal with the government telling them how to raise their kids. Its hard now to afford child care or even a baby sitter. Early 90's you could still get a 15/16 year old girl to babysit for $20 and pizza money and it covered 4-6 hours easy enough on a fri/sat night. Now try getting one for under $7-8 an hour. Child care services are also insanely expensive as well.
