Officers want to deport 32-year-old Mexican man for the eighth time

Officers detained a 32-year-old Mexican man on Thursday and want to deport him for the eighth time.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Gabriel Nevares Vega, 32, of Alamo at the Hidalgo County jail on Thursday, according to the federal criminal complaint against him.

"Record checks revealed the defendant was formally removed from the United States to Mexico for the seventh (7th) time on October 11, 2016 via the Laredo, Texas Port of Entry," according to the criminal complaint.

About four months later, immigration officers discovered Vega had crossed the border again — and been booked at the county jail.

"The defendant claims to have illegally re-entered the United States on or about January 25, 2017 by wading the Rio Grande River at or near Hidalgo, Texas," according to the criminal complaint.

Vega pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily injury-family violence, a Class A misdemeanor, on Feb. 22, according to Hidalgo County court records.

Hidalgo County Court at Law Judge Omar Maldonado sentenced Vega to time served. Jailers turned him over to immigration officers the next day.

Vega is now charged with illegal re-entry.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter E. Ormsby ordered Vega held without bond.

Vega remains in federal custody. His court-appointed attorney couldn't be reached for comment Monday morning.
