Ca - Protesters demand LA charges be dropped

By LINDA DEUTSCH AP Special Correspondent

    Updated: 02/14/2011 02:05:08 PM PST

LOS ANGELES—Protesters marched outside downtown courts Monday demanding the city attorney dismiss charges against people who were arrested for demonstrating on immigration law issues.
Carrying signs that read, "Don't Criminalize Dissent," dozens of protesters compared themselves to Egyptians seeking justice and said City Attorney Carmen Trutanich was trying to stifle free speech.

Some of the 24 people arrested last year spoke out Monday for their right to protest Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigrants and to advocate for an immigration amnesty law. Dozens of supporters were on hand.

Hearings on the cases that had been scheduled Monday were postponed to March 8 and 9. Their lawyer, John Raphling, said he believes demonstrators were justified last year in lying down in the street and blocking traffic.

"We believe it's right and proper to block traffic to wake people up," he said.

Trutanich barred plea negotiations with those arrested and is seeking up to a year of jail time for them. He says they disrupted traffic and cost the city thousands of dollars in police time.

Trutanich said he wants to discourage those who stage illegal protests.

The group outside the courthouse Monday chanted in unison: "It is our moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws."
Raul Anorvia, one of those arrested, said, "I believe in human dignity. We must stop this criminalizing of undocumented workers. We must all become Egyptians." http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_17385411

I was going to start a thread on this but I forgot. I was wondering if the illegal's would get any ideas from the Egyptians. Start rioting and causing chaos in the streets.

I guess I just got my answer.

I have been in LA, they are just lucky that the person they were blocking was not late and firmly held the belief that it is right and proper to run over the person who is trying to wake them up

Nothing new here. All illegals and most of their advocates believe it's "right and proper" to break our laws.

I know that, but the egyptian protest didn't happen a year ago.
I was wondering if they would get any ideas from the Egyptian uprising.

Yes they are and had every right to protest in my opinion. The illegals don't think twice about protesting in our streets and I was just wondering if they would get any ideas. Because of the fact that many of them think this land (the southwest) was stolen from them, and they are of the thinking that this is their land. Which we all know it's not.

I guess I was thinking they would try some major protest or rioting after seeing what happened in Egypt. Thinking that would help them in their conquest to get what they want in this country. Just a thought on my part.

everyone has a right to protest, you do NOT have a right to lay down in the middle of the street and block traffic from moving, especially if its a fire, police, or ambulance.
you then are possibly endangering someone elses life who called for any one of these three
