Officials apprehended 18 Mexican nationals Tuesday who are suspected of coming into U.S. waters illegally in a boat, according to Maritime Unified command officials.
The boat was spotted by U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Border Patrol officials at about 4:45 a.m. about five miles offshore from Dana Point, officials said.
U.S. Coast Guard officials initially made contact with the 15 men and three women in the boat, making sure they were OK and handed them life jackets, U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman Allyson Conroy said.
The 18 people were then turned over to U.S. Border Patrol officials. This is the second immigration-related maritime apprehension this week.
On Monday, 18 people were taken into custody after U.S. Border Patrol agents spotted a boat landing at San Onofre State Park.
