Hall Co. Jail finds new revenue streams

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) _ The new Hall County Jail in Grand Island has generated a record $1.3 million in revenue the first six months of this fiscal year. Corrections Director Fred Ruiz told the county Board of Supervisors recently that the 300-bed facility is able to offset some of the costs associated with the larger facility by housing inmates from other agencies. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is paying the county $1.7 million to lodge federal detainees. The county also is bringing in more than $100,000 this year in State Criminal Alien Assistance Program money. That's jail housing assistance from the federal government for foreign-born inmates who don't qualify under any other reimbursement program. The jail's budget is $5.7 million.
