R-C Staff Report
One man was arrested and 23 workers who are in the country illegally were discovered after a fire alarm at a Brimfield hotel lead to the discovery of a meth lab.
Brimfield police were called to the Econo Lodge, 4386 S.R. 43, at about 8 p.m. Monday. Once there, officers noticed a chemical odor in the hallway, Chief David Oliver said. Further investigation revealed a suspect, Anthony Henry, 37, of Alabama, who was part of a 25-person work crew in the area.
Oliver said Henry fled the scene, but police tracked him to Tallmadge, where he was arrested by Tallmadge police.

After witnesses at the hotel said Henry tossed a bag into the trash bin, Oliver said that bag was located and contained components for the manufacture of methamphetamine. It was unclear what charges Henry may be facing.

Meanwhile, officers found that 23 members of Henry’s work crew are in the country illegally, Oliver said. Brimfield police are working with the U.S. Border Patrol to sort out what will happen to them, he said.
A Drug Enforcement Agency meth lab team was called to help clean up the scene. Assistance also was provided by the Brimfield Fire Department, and Kent and Kent State University police departments.
