Census: About 25% of U.S. kids under 5 are Hispanic
    THE WASHINGTON POST

WASHINGTON — Hispanics, the nation's largest and fastest-growing minority group, now account for about one in four children younger than 5 in the United States, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates being released today.

The increase from nearly one in five in 2000 has broad implications for governments, communities and schools nationwide, suggesting that the sharp rise in the Hispanic population that demographers forecast for midcentury will occur even sooner among younger generations.

"Hispanics have both a larger proportion of people in their childbearing years and tend to have slightly more children," said Jeffrey Passel, senior demographer at the Pew Hispanic Center and co-author of a recent report predicting the nation's Latino population will double from 15 percent today to 30 percent by 2050.

"So this means that in five years, a quarter of the 5- to 9-year-olds will be Hispanic, and in 10 years a quarter of the 10- to 14-year-olds will be Hispanic," Passel said

Hispanics account for more than half the children younger than 5 in New Mexico and California, where their share of the overall state population is 44 percent and 36 percent, respectively. In Texas, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado, about one-third or more of children younger than 5 are Hispanic.

The census figures showed a slight drop in immigration to the United States by Hispanics from July 1, 2006, to July 1, 2007, vs. the previous 12-month period. That suggests the U.S. economic slowdown might have had some impact on immigration.

For nearly a decade, U.S. births have accounted for a far greater share of the growth in the Hispanic population than immigration.

well, yeah! We have a significant percentage of people from central and south america here illegally. No wonder we have a population explosion! This has nothing to do with anything "good" and legitimate, it's an INVASION and our leaders are condoning it and seeking to TOTALLY transform our country. Mark my word, in less than 10 years you will have congress legislating in Spanish!

This is exactly what Roy Beck talks about in his "gumball" presentation on Numbersusa.com. That video is astonishing.

For those of you who are new to Alipac, here is a link to the video. Watch it all the way through. Your jaw will drop by the end of it.

Also please leave a comment after you've seen it. There is a troll on the video site.

    Good reminder Gogo.

Let's also outline some basic facets for other onlookers here as well...

The US population increased from about 300,000,000 in late 2006 to 304,000,000 just yesterday sometime. That's 4 million net increase in about 18 months. While a 1% population grown rate may not sound like all that much, it's the absolute numbers of increase that are most worrisome.
(Here's the simplified equation for mass consumption here:

    Net Increase = (Births-Deaths) + Immigration [inbound]

Because the birth rate is approximately equal to the death rate among US citizens and legal residents, the overwhelming majority of the increase is coming from immigration. Or said another way, because we are having population increases (when the population should be roughly stable; as are most European countries), and the increase is coming from immigration, and the increase in immigration are due mostly to illegal entry/stay here, well... one can understand the frustration and anger amongst US citizens for those that engage in, or facilitate illegal immigration.

And it was recently announced that legal immigration was over 1 million last year. So we can do the math and approximate the number of illegal entrants.

Populist - You were reading my mind. You keyed in on precisely the point I was suggesting in that comment above

Phrede do you have a resource for those numbers. I have a new person that is very interested in the numbers. He joins a group once a week and they talk about many different issues and this is one.

    Thanks

Gogo, I'm sure I could go dig those up (might have to give me some time for the most solid references though). In the meantime, send him to Roy Beck's Gumballs video. It's a bit dated, but all the concepts still apply (the numbers have increased moderately since it's production, but it really does do a good job in outlining the proportions of the problem - IMHO).
