Omar demands ICE halt plans to deport Somali illegal immigrants from her district

Omar demands ICE halt plans to deport Somali illegal immigrants from her district: 'Risking the spread of COVID'

Rep. Ilhan Omar criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Saturday over the agency’s potential deportation of illegal immigrants back to Somalia, citing coronavirus fears as a reason to halt the deportations.

“ICE is set to deport dozens of individuals from my district to Somalia, risking the spread of COVID,” the Minnesota Democrat tweeted. “ICE’s actions will not only put these individuals at risk, but could have far-reaching consequences for Somalia. This week, I sent a letter to ICE to get answers.”

Omar, who has demanded as recently as this week that ICE be abolished, was born in Somalia and became the first Somali-American member of Congress when she was sworn in to represent Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in 2019.

In March, Omar joined 14 Democrats calling for ICE to halt all deportations, claiming that the coronavirus made it too dangerous to both hold illegal immigrants in detention centers and deport them to other countries.

“For detainees who are immunocompromised or otherwise susceptible to the worst consequences of contracting COVID-19, holding them in detention may be literally a matter of life and death," the Democrats said in a letter to the Department of Homeland Security about the spread of the coronavirus in ICE detention centers.

The letter added, “Deporting people who may have been exposed to coronavirus to either countries that have few or no cases or to countries with weak health care infrastructure is an unacceptable risk to take. Many countries, including the United States, are implementing strict border controls during this pandemic, and we should make no exception for ICE Air and deportations.”

But Omar is ok with importing millions of disease infected refugees into our country and WE pay for them.

Deport them all...including her. She should have never been permitted to come into our country or run for office.

She is under investigation for massive fraud and should be put on Leave of Absence without pay or benefits.

ICE removes Somali man convicted of aiding terror group

CHICAGO — Officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) removed a Somali man Thursday who was convicted in 2016 in U.S. District Court of providing aid to a terror organization.

Mahdi Mohammed Hashi, 31, a citizen of Somalia, was removed by ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Chicago Field Office via an ICE Air Operations charter flight without incident.

Once in Somalia, ICE officers transferred custody of Hashi to local authorities.

“ICE is committed to removing individuals who threaten not only public safety, but also national security,” said Senior Official Performing the Duties of Director Tony Pham. “This case is a prime example of the work we do to protect the homeland and pursue individuals engaged in supporting terror organizations.”

“We are dedicated to our mission of removing individuals who threaten the safety of our communities,” said Thomas Feeley, interim field office director for ERO Chicago. “This case illustrates that the U.S. will actively pursue those individuals engaged in supporting terror organizations. With the help of our federal and international partners, we continue to be vigilant against the threat to our communities.”

From approximately April 2008 to August 2012, Hashi served as a member of al-Shabaab in Somalia. In 2012, he was extradited to the United States to face federal prosecution in the Eastern District of New York.

Hashi pleaded guilty to providing material support to al-Shabaab, and on January 29, 2016, was sentenced to nine years imprisonment and issued a judicial order of removal.

Upon his release from the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Leavenworth, Kansas, he entered ICE custody April 6, 2020.

High-profile removals include those who are wanted for a crime in another country, such as murder, rape, sexual abuse of a minor, drug offenses, alien smuggling, fraud or theft. Others include persons who are national security risks, such as suspected terrorists, those involved in counter-proliferation crimes or those on the terrorist watch list and/or the no-fly list, along with human rights or war crimes violators.

Since Oct. 1, 2009, ERO has removed more than 3,700 foreign fugitives from the United States who were sought in their native countries for serious crimes, including kidnapping, rape and murder. In fiscal year 2019, ICE removed or returned 267,000 aliens. ERO arrested 143,000 aliens, more than 86 percent of whom had criminal convictions or pending criminal charges.

ICE is focused on removing public safety threats, such as convicted criminal aliens and gang members, as well as individuals who have violated our nation’s immigration laws, including those who illegally re-entered the country after being removed and immigration fugitives ordered removed by federal immigration judges.

Members of the public who have information about foreign fugitives are urged to contact ICE by calling the ICE Tip Line at 1 (866) 347-2423 or internationally at 001-1802-872-6199. They can also file a tip online by completing ICE’s online tip form.

ICE responds to Rep. Omar’s COVID-19 concerns with deportation flight

(FOX 9) - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is responding to a letter from Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota that expressed “grave concerns” over a scheduled deportation flight to Somalia that may include passengers with COVID-19 symptoms.

“Deporting immigrants during a pandemic is cruel — but deporting immigrants infected with COVID-19 and exporting the virus to other countries is on an entirely different level of inhumane,” Rep. Omar wrote on Twitter, citing a Roll Call report.

ICE sent a response letter to Rep. Omar on Friday, indicating 39 people were on board the flight from Louisiana to Mogadishu. ICE said one of those passengers had previously tested positive for COVID-19, and was removed from the passenger list. A spokesperson told FOX 9 they were never on the flight.

In last week’s letter, Omar underscored that Somalia has only 15 intensive care unit beds for a population of 15 million, making it particularly vulnerable during the pandemic. For this reason, Somalia has refused to take deportees who test positive for COVID-19.

“If ICE tries to deport people who don’t have recent negative tests, they’re violating their agreement with the Somali government,” she told Roll Call. “The consequences could be absolutely catastrophic."

In its letter, officials said ICE will not typically remove immigrants who are not fit for travel -- including those with COVID-19. Any deportee with a temperature above 99 degrees is held from boarding for further evaluation, the agency added.

"ICE is cooperating with the Government of Somalia's requirement to test all Somali nationals being repatriated," officials wrote in the letter. "Any ICE detainee who fails to pass screening by a flight medical provider and/or is suspected of having a health condition potentially contagious to other detainees, staff, and/or third parties is denied boarding and referred to an ICE-approved facility for further screening and evaluation."
