A 24-year-old Mexican national was killed last night after he crashed his car into a light pole along Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Felix Samuel Castro was driving eastbound on Highway 111 shortly before 9:45 last night at a high-rate of speed when he lost control of the Honda sedan he was driving, authorities said.
The vehicle jumped a curb and crashed into a light pole in front of Desert European Motor Cars just west of Indian Trail.
The impact caused the front of the car to wrap around the pole, killing Castro and injuring a passenger, officials said.
Authorities briefly shutdown the westbound lanes of Highway 111, but kept the eastbound lanes closed overnight.
The eastbound lanes were reopened this morning.
Authorties are continuing to try to identify the passenger.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact sheriff's deputies at 836-1600.
