Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly told GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump he will have to give specifics about how he will force Mexico to pay for a border wall once he faces debate moderators on Thursday.
Trump was a guest on O'Reilly's show Tuesday night, and the host reminded Trump of an interview following his June 16 campaign announcement. Trump had said he would build a border wall and "force Mexico to pay for it."
O'Reilly laughed at that statement, saying it would be impossible.
Trump on Tuesday still insisted he would do so, through stopping trade deals between the two countries. When O'Reilly suggested that meant a President Trump using an executive order to nullify the North American Free Trade Agrement, Trump didn't flinch.
"So simple," Trump insisted. "Mexico will pay for the wall. I will make sure it gets done properly.
"But how? What are you going to do to [Mexican President Enrique Peña} Nieto?" O'Reilly pressed. "They will say forget it."
"It's simple. They are taking in billions and billions of dollars," Trump said, pointing to a Ford Motor plant being built in Mexico."I'm going to say Mexico, guess what, this is not going to continue. You are going to pay for the wall. I have said they will pay for the wall and they will pay for the wall."
The price for the wall is "peanuts" compared to what Mexico is making off U.S. trade, he said.
Republican strategist Karl Rove appeared after Trump, saying that the line won't sell over time.
Trump's only challenge in Thursday's debate will be making people feel they can see him sitting in the Oval Office, and to do that he will have to actually explain how he will accomplish his goals – including the border wall, Rove said.
"He has got to be more substantive. He has got it have a plan."
