EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — The owner of the land in Sunland Park, New Mexico, where the private border wall was built is facing legal action from the city.
American Eagle Brick Factory owner George Cudahy failed to appear for a court hearing on Wednesday night.
The court wouldn’t tell KFOX14 the specific charge Cudahy is facing, but it comes with a $500 fine, which is the highest amount the municipal court is legally allowed to charge.
The city of Sunland Park will be filing a criminal summons, meaning if Cudahy misses his next hearing, the city will arrest him.
Former Sunland Park Mayor Isabel Santos alerted KFOX14 to the hearing on Wednesday and said this may be the first step in the city determining what went wrong in the process of approving the private border wall.
“The people here in Sunland Park are confused, you know, because we don’t know anything. We don’t know who made the mistake, the city or them,” said Santos.
Santos said this case will highlight the city’s double standard for giving building permits.
“Why not? If they let them build a millionaire beautification and not my house, a little one? I don’t understand this. I really don’t,” said Carmen Montelongo, a resident of Sunland Park.
The founder of the private wall, Brian Kolfage, told KFOX14 before the hearing that his group was not facing legal action.
