At least five people were hurt during a shootout at the U.S.-Mexico border at the San Ysidro port of entry.

A Border Patrol supervisor told the San Diego police that the two vans were headed toward the U.S. when a gun battle erupted between the vans at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Maurice Luque of the San Diego Fire Rescue Department said five people were hurt in two vans. One person was transported to Mercy Hospital by ambulance. The other four people were being treated at the scene. At least three ambulances were at the scene at 4 p.m.

According to a San Diego police spokeswoman, no law enforcement officers were involved in the shooting. One of the vehicles was stolen from the city of San Diego, according to police.

Officials closed down a portion of the border crossing on the U.S. side as a crime scene, but the port of entry remained otherwise opened.

    The story just changed.

TV News is now saying that I.C.E. and Border Patrol agents fired on the vans, and that only 4 people were wounded.

Four Hurt in Shootout at Border

Four Hurt in Shootout at Border

As many as 50 people were in vans in human-smuggling incident, ICE spokeswoman says

At least four people were hurt during a shootout at the U.S.-Mexico border at the San Ysidro port of entry on Tuesday afternoon, according to officials.

A Border Patrol supervisor told the San Diego police that the two vans were headed toward the U.S. when a gun battle erupted involving two or three vans at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Original reports from officials stated that the shooting was between two vehicles, but Lauren Mack of Immigration and Customs Enforcement later said the vans were involved in human smuggling and that an ICE agent was involved in the shooting. Mack said as many as 50 people may have been inside the vans.

Maurice Luque of San Diego Fire Rescue originally said five people were hurt in the shooting, but other officials later insisted that four people riding in the vans had been hurt; it's not known if they were shot.

Originally, a San Diego police spokeswoman said no law enforcement officers were involved in the shooting, but she later stated that the incident was an officer-involved shooting and that customs agents and an ICE agent fired during the scene. She added that the investigation would be conducted by the San Diego police homicide unit.

Officials stressed that all the suspects involved in the incident were in custody. One of the vehicles was stolen from the city of San Diego, according to the police spokeswoman.

A portion of the border crossing on the U.S. side was closed down as a crime scene, but the port of entry remained otherwise opened. Traffic, however, soon backed up far into the Mexican side of the border.

SAN DIEGO – A gunfight broke out Tuesday afternoon as people in three vans they to run the San Ysidro Port of Entry, injuring four people, including an innocent motorist, authorities said.

Agents for the U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Immigrations and Customs fired shots in response during the incident, which began about 3:30 p.m., said San Diego spokeswoman Mónica Muñoz.

    The agents were not injured.

Lauren Mack, spokeswoman for ICE, said the incident was related to human smuggling. More than 70 people have been taken into custody, she said.

The incident created a huge traffic jam at the border. Vehicles were being turned around at the port of entry and headed back into Mexico, and the port will remain closed for several hours during the investigation.

Maurice Luque, spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, said three of the four victims suffered life-threatening injuries. Two were taken to UCSD Medical Center and one was taken to Mercy Hospital.

The fourth victim was taken to Mercy Hospital. That person was in a vehicle that got caught in the crossfire, Luque said. The injury was not life-threatening.

In addition, a fifth person, an innocent bystander, tripped and fell and was assessed at the scene, Luque said. That person was not taken to a hospital.

Because it is an officer-involved shooting, it will be investigated by the San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit, which is standard practice in such incidents.

An investigation is under way to determine what led to the shooting.

U.S. reports a checkpoint wounded; Mexico three dead

    TIJUANA, Baja California (PH)

Chaos and confusion occurred this afternoon at the San Ysidro checkpoint after it was recorded apparently an altercation between five and agents of Customs and Border Protection about an hour ago, and there are two versions about a part of EU indicating that one of the civilians involved was shot.

The other version is that Mexican authorities reported killing three people dead, a woman injured and dozens arrested.

Shortly before 15:30 hours, crossing into the U.S. vehicles through the checkpoint at San Ysidro was practically suspended apparently because the detention of some people trying to cross illegally and violenata the neighboring country.

Info San Diego Police said that there were three vehicles involved, who crossed lanes and 15 to 24 shots were exchanged, where a person who apparently tried to cross illegally, was hit by fire .

Lauren Mack, spokeswoman for the Department of Immigration and U.S. Customs, said that the vehicles tried to cross illegally to the rails, so that agents and repelled the assault was an element of the ICE who made the gun blasts.

Witnesses who were there when the facts indicated that one of the units, a white van, was passed by the immigration officer to secondary screening and was there when a considerable number of officers within Customs and Border Protection (CBP, its acronym in English) and waited for the driver.

"There were too Patrol agents do not know what happened, I think they were shooting and everyone started to lose their cars while lined up right there," Marion said Reyes, who was crossing into Tijuana to Puerto Mexico.

    The Mexican version

A man who had just crossed the Sentri Lane said that when the facts, all persons who had admitted but not yet passed through the bars before entering Route 5 were lowered from their units and their identifications checked.

At the moment the U.S. authorities Immigrration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are conducting the necessary investigations and then more information will be announced.

According to information from Mexican authorities, the balance for the shooting at the gate at San Ysidro is three people dead, a woman injured and dozens arrested.

It appears that three vehicles were kind of panel which tried to violently enter the U.S., so it is presumed that the U.S. authorities triggered their weapons, so far it is unknown whether the people who were fired on vehicles.

Because they were three vehicles capable of transporting several people are driving a preliminary number of about 60 detainees.

At the moment it waits for more information ...

San Diego border closes after shootout injures 4

San Diego border closes after shootout injures 4

Officials say the gunfire was part of a plot to smuggle illegal immigrants

SAN DIEGO - The U.S. has closed the border crossing near San Diego Tuesday night after four people were injured in a gun battle involving an attempt to smuggle illegal immigrants from Mexico into the U.S., authorities said.

More than 70 people traveling in three vans involved in the incident were in federal custody, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman Angelica DeCima.

Details remained sketchy, but van drivers tried to storm past inspectors at the San Ysidro port of entry and make their way into the U.S. without stopping, DeCima said.

"It was human smuggling, definitely," said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Three of the injured people were in the vans, and a fourth was in another vehicle, DeCima said. It was unclear how serious the injuries were.

An ICE agent and a CBP officer fired their guns during the shootout, DeCima said.

The shootout occurred over nine lines of traffic in the 24 northbound lanes, said Monica Munoz, a San Diego police spokeswoman.

About 40,000 vehicles enter the U.S. each day at San Ysidro, which connects San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. Investigators closed the port to vehicle traffic from Mexico to the United States.
