CA-Man held in beating of woman due in court (updated)

Man held in beating of woman due in court Monday

    The Associated Press

    REDWOOD CITY, Calif.

A former Redwood City man accused of beating a 77-year-old woman with a crow bar during a robbery nearly three years ago is due back in court Monday.

San Mateo County prosecutors say Jose Perez-Gonzalez attacked the woman during a robbery of her Daly City home in January of 2008. The attack left the woman blind and confined to an assisted living facility.

After a warrant was issued for Perez-Gonzalez, he was arrested in his native Mexico in November of 2008, then extradited to the U.S. in 2009.

Prosecutors say jury trial assignment is set for Monday, the fifth setting since arraignment in August 2009.

The 31-year-old Perez-Gonzalez has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges in the case. He is being held without bail. The trial is expected to last two weeks.

Burglar who beat, blinded woman gets 11-year term

Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer

    Friday, March 4, 2011

    (03-03) 07:33 PST DALY CITY --

A man has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for beating and blinding a 78-year-old widow inside her Daly City home after she surprised him during a robbery attempt, a prosecutor said Thursday.

Jose Perez-Gonzalez, 31, an illegal immigrant who was living in South San Francisco, committed an especially horrific, savage and vicious crime, Judge Craig Parsons of San Mateo County Superior Court said Wednesday as he sentenced him to 11 years and eight months behind bars.

Parsons called Perez-Gonzalez's actions "selfish and stupid," said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. The judge also ordered him to pay more than $103,000 in restitution.

Perez-Gonzalez broke into the woman's home in the Serramonte neighborhood on Jan. 12, 2008, by prying open a rear sliding-glass door. When the woman confronted him, Perez-Gonzalez beat her in the face with his metal pry bar, an attack that left her blind.

Police found the woman near death after they responded to a silent burglar alarm. She now lives in a rest home. Her name has not been released.

Perez-Gonzalez was a tenant in a South San Francisco apartment building that the victim's family owned. An acquaintance of Perez-Gonzalez telephoned the woman earlier in the day and posed as a package deliveryman to determine when she was going to be home, police said.

Perez-Gonzalez intended to burglarize the residence when no one was there, authorities said.

Police tracked him to his hometown of Guadalajara, where Mexican authorities arrested him in November 2008.

In December, Parsons convicted Perez-Gonzalez of attempted robbery, residential burglary, mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse and possession of stolen property.
