Panel debates what to do with broken immigration system

That the U.S. immigration system is broken was about the only thing all panelists tackling that topic Monday at St. Mary's University could agree on.

But four of the five participants favored a path to citizenship for those already in the country illegally and more visas for those trying to get here.

On those issues, U.S. Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund national litigation director Nina Perales, St. Mary's law professor and activist Lee Teran and Benita Veliz, a St. Mary's alumna facing deportation, squared off against George Rodriguez, president of the San Antonio Tea Party.

In most criminal cases, Gonzalez said, first-time offenders are not punished to the full extent of the law. They usually receive deferred adjudication or probation.

“I say why don't we just apply that to our immigration system, and have pathway to citizenship?â€

The only thing broken about Immigration is the Governments refusal to enforce the law!

Teran pointed out that it can take years, even decades, for legal immigrants to obtain visas.
And there lies the rub... it's perfectly fine for everyone else, but we illegals feel we shouldn't have to wait. "We got across the border", now we want our reward!

[quote]When Rodriguez suggested Veliz should find a legal path to U.S. residency, Teran pointed out that it can take years, even decades, for legal immigrants to obtain visas. Immigrants like Veliz, who was brought here as a child, have almost no chance of getting a visa, he said.

Worth repeating: With over three hundred million population what is the end game do we have unlimited resources, can we feed, clothe and protect the world, someone in power needs to wake up be an adult and look at the facts.

Amnesty will only bring another 30 million illegals:
I'm old with many opinions few solutions.

It might be a good idea while during the 10 year wait to work on improving conditions in Mexico and highlighting and eliminating corruption,

A panel of ALL Hispanics only leads to the truth........RACISM and lack of knowledge of existing laws.
You cannot dedicate yourself to America unless you become in every
respect and with every purpose of your will thoroughly Americans. You
cannot become thoroughly Americans if you think of yourselves in groups. President Woodrow Wilson
