Perry praises border security operation

DEL RIO, Texas Governor Rick Perry visited Del Rio today to get an update on a state-local law enforcement effort to secure the state's border with Mexico.

Operation Del Rio targets international criminal enterprises in an effort to reduce crime and violence in five counties along the Rio Grande.

A statement issued by the governor's office today says Val Verde County, where Del Rio is situated, has seen a 76-percent fall in major crime compared to the same 30-day period last year.

Perry touted the increased patrols as leading to a decrease in all crimes.

The operation includes the sheriffs of Kinney, Maverick, Val Verde, Zavala and Dimmitt counties, along with the police departments of Del Rio and Eagle Pass. Also participating are U-S Customs and Border Protection, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas National Guard and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The Civil Air Patrol and the Governor's Division of Emergency Management also participate.
