Huckabee picks up critics on immigration record
by Christi Parsons

Mike Huckabee has been a big hit with crowds in the Carolinas lately, but he's also picking up a tail of critics following him around.

Voters who showed up for one event this weekend had their car windows papered with flyers critical of Huckabee, contending that the Arkansas Republican and former Baptist minister isn't a "true conservative."

The flyers make a big deal of Huckabee's past support for education for children regardless of their imigration status.

Apparently, Huckabee has been too supportive of "diversity in culture" for the writers of the flyer, who identify themselves with the tagline of "Lynchburg Christian Students for the Truth."

"Is something wrong with our Southern Christian culture?" the flyer asks.

Several Huckabee fans were dismissive of the flyers when they returned to their cars. But one local Republican leader said he thinks that, while Huckabee will be very popular with South Carolina conservatives, he has to be careful with the immigration issue.

Local residents are very upset about illegal immigration, said Samuel D. Harms, III, the Greenville County Republican chairman.

"Mike Huckabee's got to explain it," he said, "or he risks alienating the conservative base."
