Homeland Security appeals halt in enforcement of ‘no match’ lists

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security late Tuesday appealed a federal judge’s decision to stop the government from enforcing rules that would require employers to fire workers whose names and Social Security numbers don’t match.
The move comes two months after U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco issued an injunction requested by several human rights and labor groups, warning that the rules could hurt businesses and documented workers.
The rules, announced this summer, were the focus of a renewed push by President Bush to combat illegal immigration in the wake of Congress’ inability to pass comprehensive immigration policy reform.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on Wednesday said his department “is not abandoningâ€Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
