Phoenix mayor says SB1070 hurts public safety, education

Tucson – State laws like Arizona's SB1070, which aims to criminalize undocumented immigrants, not only has a negative effect on the economy, but also on public safety and education, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon told Efe.

He said the state continues suffering the effects of the economic boycott launched after the enactment of SB1070 last year and that it continues to be reflected in the canceling of conventions and seminars.

"These cancellations affect the businesses of Hispanics and non-Hispanics alike," Gordon said after a speech at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

According to an analysis by the Washington-based Center for American Progress, the boycott has cost Arizona more than $140 million.

The Democrat, one of the first politicians to come out against the controversial law, said the legislation has caused a great lack of confidence in the police.

"Laws like SB1070 do not make our communities safer," the mayor said Thursday on the UA campus.

"I believe that immigrants, especially Hispanics, are afraid to report the criminals in their neighborhoods because they fear being arrested and questioned about their immigration status," Gordon, an outspoken critic of the migrant sweeps carried out by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, said.

The mayor said that critics of illegal immigration constantly talk about how much it "costs" the state to provide public services and education for the undocumented, but forget about how much they pay in taxes.

The economic effect of SB1070 is seen in all the housing sitting empty for months, and how the domino effect is also harming businesses both big and small that have lost customers and clients.

Gordon believes that one of the biggest problems currently facing Arizona is its image, since certain companies simply stay away from the state rather than get involved in such controversial issues as immigration.

The mayor said that the failure of the federal government to approve a comprehensive immigration reform has particularly affected undocumented students.

He said that some of the most outstanding students in the fields of mathematics and engineering at Arizona State University in Phoenix are undocumented immigrants.

"I believe it is urgent for the DREAM Act to be passed - if immigration reform cannot be achieved, I believe that at least legal immigration status should be approved for such outstanding young people who only want to contribute to our society," he said.

Arizona has a state law that obliges undocumented students attending community colleges and public universities to pay tuition at the rate for foreign students.

This is exactly how Janet Napolitano and Eric Holder see it also.

In fact, Janet says our border with Mexico is just about perfect.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon needs to be handed his pink slip!

I hope someone will step up to the plate to run against him, someone not in the pocket of LaRacists and big business. This guy spouts all the usual propaganda...

I guess that someone forgot to tell the mayor that illegals are undercutting Americans for jobs and that when our young people can't get jobs they tend to commit crimes and end up in jai, which makes it even harder for them to get jobs.

Ultimately Pro-Americans need Universal E-Verify and a statement by Congress reaffirming the original intent of the 14th Amendment. Jobs are the principal lure for illegals, but anchor babies make a bad situation worse.

Gordon is a fool if he thinks its hurting his city and state and making people less safe. i think its doing the opposite and making people more safe by keeping out some criminal element that does not want to be there and be arrested

Gordon is simply caving to the pressure from the White House, (in)Justice dept., Calderon, LaRaza, Mecha, the SPLC, and MS13.

He doesn't want to be the odd man out once the Aztlan flag is finally raised over the capitol.

The new slogan echoing from all government: Americans come SECOND

Phil Gordon is an idiot. The houses and apartment complexes that are sitting empty are empty because all the illegals living there boogied when SB1070 was signed by Gov. Brewer. The businesses that were harmed were the ones whose owners and customers were illegals. Cry me a river.

I will tell you this moment what is i.e., "hurting the public" nationwide, is all of the fraud crimes, murders, illegal substances traffickers, rapes of the elderly, babies, children of all ages and crime against innocent citizens in every State of America. Here are some other things that are not only "hurting the public" but, this nation as a whole. Illegal employments, hospital debts sending the Country into a deeper recession. Fraud Id's, undocumented aliens attending America schools, and tax payers paying for educations, receiving welfare, food stamps, Medicate, Medicare and citizens footing all of the bills. Unlawful border crossings by criminals from all walks of life on a daily basis and suing citizens, after performing unlawful acts on private properties. These are the thing we Americans should worry about, these are the things we all should seek ways to eliminate, instead of protesting against laws that will get the U.S. back on track and prevent further invasions by undocumented aliens.
When you aid and support criminals, you live a criminal life style yourself:
