DOBSON — A joint operation involving the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, the Mount Airy Police Department and the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office has resulted in the arrest of two people on multiple charges related to the trafficking of methamphetamine.

On Nov. 22, Ana Karen Bartolo, 26, and Elver Manuel Campos, 35, both of 105 Oakwood Drive, Apt. 14, Yadkinville, were arrested by narcotics investigators from the Surry County Sheriff’s Office and the Mount Airy Police Department after officers stopped their vehicle on N.C. 89 West near Graceland Lane, in the Beulah community of Surry County.

Officers had received information the suspects were traveling between Yadkin and Surry counties distributing large quantities of methamphetamine.

On Nov. 22, investigators received information that the pair were leaving their home in Yadkin County heading toward Surry County. Based on pervious intelligence, detectives believed that the final destination was somewhere in the Beulah area.

While monitoring the area, two of the officers located the suspect vehicle, and after developing probable cause, the vehicle was stopped, according to a release from the Surry County Sheriff’s Office. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officers discovered two children one 4-years old and one 7-months old. Officers later determined that the children belonged to the suspects.

Upon searching the vehicle, investigators located just over a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of methamphetamine in the passenger compartment of the 2006 Chevrolet Trail Blazer, officials reported. Further investigation revealed additional methamphetamine in the rear area of the vehicle totaling about five pounds. The total amount of methamphetamine seized during the stop was more than seven pounds.

While officers in Surry County were finishing at the scene of the stop, Yadkin County drug investigators were executing a search warrant at the suspects’ home located in Yadkinville.

That search yielded about two ounces of methamphetamine and two ounces of cocaine, along with $8,000 in cash, according to reports from the sheriff’s office.

Both suspects were charged initially in Surry County with three counts of trafficking methamphetamine; and one count of maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of storing and transporting controlled substances.

These charges were in relation to the ongoing investigation.

Campos also was found to have an outstanding order for arrest for failing to appear on a driving while impaired charge. Campos, who has several aliases, also was found to have been previously deported.

Campos had a bond set at $812,000 secured, as well as a detainer filed by Immigration and Customs (ICE).

Bartolo had her bond set at $ 750,000.

Both are scheduled to appear in Surry County District Court Dec. 14.

This investigation is continuing and other charges are expected, reported the Surry County Sheriff’s Office.
