Police Chiefs Want Feds to Enforce Immigration Laws

    Frontera NorteSur

A group of police chiefs traveled to Washington, D.C. this week to tell federal policymakers that local cops should not be burdened with enforcing national immigration laws. Sponsored by the non-profit Police Foundation, the law enforcement officials expressed concerns that the federal government was pressuring state and municipal police forces to take up the slack in enforcing immigration laws, especially by means of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency’s 287 (g) program, which deputizes local and state police to carry out immigration law enforcement duties.

Several police chiefs participated in a Washington, D.C. press conference to convey their message. They included Chief Harold Hurtt; Houston, Texas; Chief George Gascon, Mesa, Arizona; Chief Jose L. Lopez, Durham, North Carolina; Chief Toussaint E. Summers, Herndon, Virginia; and Chief Ronald Miller, Topeka, Kansas.

According to Chief Hurtt, expecting local police to act as immigration agents goes against community police efforts. Turning cops on the beat into potential deportation agents sabotages the trust and cooperation of immigrant communities, and could lead to racial profiling, Chief Hurtt asserted.

A new report issued by the Police Foundation contends that civil immigration enforcement by local cops “undermines their core public safety mission, diverts scarce resources, increases their exposure to liability and litigation, and exacerbates fear in our communities.â€

"Police Chiefs Want Feds to Enforce Immigration Laws"
I want the Feds to inforce all immigration laws too.

I just don't mind if city, county and state law enforcement officers and agencies give them a hand.

Why be in law enforcement if you do not want to see that all laws are enforced? The Police Chiefs should not be protecting illegal aliens from detection. They should actively be policing and trying all means to rid their cities of illegal aliens and criminal activities associated within their communities. I would be concerned about any officer unwilling to find out who people really are and if they have a legal right to be in their city. With the 287 g , CAP (Criminal Alien Program) and other successful operations, state and local law enforcement officials can help to enforce immigration law.

Police Chiefs with the International group appear to be reluctant to do anything much and ride the fence on illegal immigration. Within that Police Association, some are chiefs in sanctuary cities so what could we expect.

I hope that more in law enforcement will be anxious to do something and demand that the federal government do its job to assist them.

We all have an extremely strong desire to see all our immigration laws enforced by the federal government. However, I don't believe the federal government has the resources to enforce our laws up to the standard we want and expect. Therefore, I think it is important that state, city, and county law enforcement coorperate and assist whenever and wherever possible.

Furthermore, I think it's important that local law enforcement reevaluate their priorities because protecting and serving American citizens should come before some misguided idea that protecting and serving illegal aliens is a lawful duty. Is it lawful to ignore federal law? Of course not, federal law supercedes all state and local law.

There is a glaring fallacy in the statement that 287(g) promotes stopping people and asking their immigration status. It allows access to a database to verify citizenship status of a person ARRESTED FOR ANOTHER CRIME. Then that person can have a hold for deportation placed until ICE can assume custody, instead of the usual catch and release.

In addition, the Chief of El Paso thinks his city is safe?

    About El Paso crime rates
The crime rate in El Paso is considerably higher than the national average across all communities in America from the largest to the smallest, although at 44 crimes per one thousand residents, it is not among the communities with the very highest crime rate. The chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in El Paso is 1 in 23. Based on FBI crime data, El Paso is not one of the safest communities in America. Relative to Texas, El Paso has a crime rate that is higher than 70% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes.

However, NeighborhoodScout analyzed all cities and towns in America with a similar population size to El Paso, and we found that the crime rate in El Paso is one of the lowest in the nation for its size. This means El Paso is one of the safest places in America in which to live for its size, a very important finding.

The crime data that NeighborhoodScout used for this analysis are the seven offenses from the uniform crime reports, collected by the FBI from 17,000 local law enforcement agencies, and include both violent and property crimes, combined.

Now let us turn to take a look at how El Paso does for violent crimes specifically, and then how it does for property crimes. This is important because the overall crime rate can be further illuminated by understanding if violent crime or property crimes (or both) are the major contributors to the general rate of crime in El Paso.

From our analysis, we discovered that violent crime in El Paso occurs at a rate higher than in most communities of all population sizes in America. The chance that a person will become a victim of a violent crime in El Paso – such as armed robbery, aggravated assault, rape or murder – is 1 in 174. This equates to a rate of 6 per one thousand inhabitants.

NeighborhoodScout's analysis also reveals that El Paso's rate for property crime is 38 per one thousand population. This makes El Paso a place where there is an above average chance of becoming a victim of a property crime, when compared to all other communities in America of all population sizes. Property crimes are motor vehicle theft, arson, larceny, and burglary. Your chance of becoming a victim of any of these crimes in El Paso is one in 26.
