BROWNSVILLE - Investigators are trying to determine the source of hundreds of thousands of dollars found during a traffic stop Saturday in Brownsville.

Police officers found more than $500,000 in a red Dodge Caravan headed north on Expressway 77/83.

"There were two individuals in the vehicle, a 36- and 33-year-old male. Both were released that same day ... no charges filed," Brownsville Police Investigator Jose Trevino said.

The men told officers the money wasn't theirs. Officers now are trying to find out who gave the money to the men.

"It's not very often that one comes across someone carrying this amount of money without it being illegal proceeds," Trevino said.

The two men may face charges in the future, he said.
