MILTON -- An illegal immigrant accused of attempting to decapitate another man with an 18-inch machete was captured by U.S. marshals Wednesday in Silver Spring, Md.
Daniel Lopez-Bonilla, 45, who gave a Sunbury address, allegedly attacked Oscar Belinda Molina, at 1415 Seagrave Road, Delaware Township, Northumberland County, around 11:12 p.m. March 6.
Police said the men, along with several others, had been drinking, and when Molina stood and walked toward the door, Lopez-Bonilla approached him from behind, wielding the machete.
His first blow struck Molina on the upper left arm and Molina shouted, "Why are you doing this?"
"To kill you," Lopez-Bonilla replied as swung the machete at Molina's head.
Molina raised his left arm to block the blow and was struck on the left wrist, causing a 3-inch long laceration.
By the time state police arrived, everyone had left the house. Molina was taken to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, by a woman friend he called after the alleged attack. Lopez-Bonilla had fled.
Police on Monday obtained a warrant for Lopez-Bonilla's arrest on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
The U.S. Marshals Service was brought in because a violent crime had been committed, and Lopez-Bonilla was considered a fugitive. The marshals contacted federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, from whom they learned that Lopez-Bonilla was not a U.S. citizen.
They also learned that Lopez-Bonilla had an address in Sunbury and had connections in Berwick and in Silver Spring. Coordinating leads from both places, marshals determined that Lopez-Bonilla was in Silver Spring, where he was arrested without incident Wednesday.
He is being held without bail in the Seven Locks Detention Facility in Montgomery County, Md., pending extradition to Northumberland County.
