Police search for alleged kidnapper, rapist in Mint Hill apartment complex

09:31 AM EDT on Saturday, May 14, 2005

    By TONY BURBECK / 6NEWS

Police were still searching Saturday for a MS-13 gang member, who allegedly kidnapped a couple and raped the woman.

Officers arrived at the Stoney Point apartment complex in Mint Hill on Stoney Trace Drive around 2 p.m., preventing residents from entering and urging those inside to stay in their homes.

According to police, 32-year-old Juan Carlos Martinez, who had just been released from prison, slept in the woods outside of the York County home of a 19-year-old woman he had kidnapped before. He allegedly kidnapped the woman and her boyfriend and drove the couple to a Stoney Point apartment that may have belonged to his brother. There, he let the boyfriend go and raped the woman, police said.

"Apparently he had kidnapped the same person in the past, served time and got out," said Chief Brian Barnhardt of the Mint Hill Police Department. "There was never a relationship. It's just because he had some type of thing for her."

The woman escaped while the suspect cleaned himself up. A passerby drove her to Rock Hill. The boyfriend called police after being dropped off outside the apartment, police said.

Martinez was later spotted walking around the neighborhood with a gun, trying to find the woman.

School buses that would have served the complex were not allowed on to the property. Affected schools include Independence High School, Lebanon Road Elementary, Northeast Middle School and Idlewild Elementary. Students who live at Stoney Point were kept at their schools or returned to school.

Tiffiny Mendez ran home after getting off of her school bus.

"My mom and dad said we couldn't come out of the house until the cops came to our home and made sure everything was good," she said.

Once officers searched eight to 10 apartments and cars in the parking lot with no results, they opened up the complex again, warning neighbors to look out for the presumably armed suspect. Officers will increase patrols through the complex throughout the night, police said.

If you have seen Martinez, call 911.
