Federal officials say they’re prepared for the expected crush of reporters and spectators in town for a two-week trial on Hazleton’s ordinances targeting illegal immigrants.

The nonjury trial begins Monday at the William J. Nealon Federal Courthouse, after residents and business organizations filed suit challenging the legality of ordinances passed by Hazleton City Council. The ordinances make it illegal to enter into a lease with an illegal immigrant or employ an illegal immigrant.

Lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union, other advocacy groups and several private legal firms represent the plaintiffs.

National media outlets such as CNN, National Public Radio, The Associated Press and Spanish-language media company Univision have all registered for media passes required to get a seat in U.S. District Judge James M. Munley’s courtroom.

“We’re prepared,” said Sylvia Murphy, Judge Munley’s courtroom deputy. “For us, it’s the same as any other case.”

That may be, but a page explaining the “rules” of the courtroom has been set up on the U.S. Middle District of Pennsylvania’s Web site.

“We’re all kind of restricted by what we can say,” said Kevin Calpin, operations manager for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. “Go to the Web site.”

According to the site, there will be 40 seats set aside for spectators and 40 for media.

Passes will be distributed for those seats beginning an hour before the trial.

Anyone with a pass must be seated 20 minutes before the trial starts.

As with any trial, anyone coming into the courthouse will be required to show a driver’s license or similar photo identification and go through a metal detector, according to the Web site.

The U.S. marshals also are ready for the upcoming trial, according to Don Heemer, chief deputy for the Middle District.

They’re not planning to do anything out of the ordinary, he said, other than possibly put a few more marshals in place in the courtroom if it’s crowded.

“Not a lot of hearings attract this much attention,” Chief Deputy Heemer said. “We’re prepared for the volume.”

I hate to naysay, but if it is presided over by a Federal judge who answers to bush, what do you think??

It just seems unfortunate that a great nation such as our has so many problems enforcing the laws. I don't care what nationality, religion or your sexual preference (adult to adult) you believe in. I just care about our country enforcing the laws which have govern this great nation.

Come into this country legally and enjoy your life. My family came here the legal route. Our problem is the lack of consistancy in carrying out what we need to do. Just like child molestors and rapist, we keep letting them out of prison and they do it again and again. Until we follow the laws and be consistant, we will never get it right.

As Americans we have the freedom to not do business with the companies that harbor, employ, and fund illegal aliens. We need more websites, such as this to exploite these businesses so we know who to do business with. It would be nice if this website could post on the front page these companies who are breaking the law. Maybe, there is a list inside this website somewhere, I am still getting aquainted with this website.

You know the sad part is that many of these illegal aliens are probably very nice people. But, that's not the point. They need to not live in the U.S. as a criminal and to come to the U.S. legally.
