Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect in the rape of a 10-year-old girl at her home in the 1200 block of Alexander Hamilton on Sunday.

The girl's mother returned to her home from shopping at about 10:15 a.m. and found a man sexually assaulting her daughter, police spokesman Joe Rios said.

While the mother ran across the street yelling for help, the man fled through a side door, police said.

Police staked out several street corners in the West Side neighborhood, aided by canine search teams, but were unable to catch him.

The warrant for aggravated sexual assault of a child was issued for Alfredo Camacho Jr., who is described as 5 foot 4 and 160 pounds. He is believed to be armed and dangerous.

The mother and Camacho know each other, police said, but they would not elaborate on their relationship.

Gregory Vargas, 18, was getting out of bed in the house across the street when the girl's mother began pounding on the door.

"He's raping my daughter! He's on top of my daughter!" Vargas recalled the woman screaming.

Vargas, not fully dressed, threw on a pair of shoes and chased the man toward an alley.

"I tried to go around the block, but he vanished," he said.
