Mayor blasts feds’ action, and plenty blast mayor; more raids likely

Immigration raids this week on the Fresh Del Monte produce processing plant and its staffing facility ended in the arrests of 167 people, and observers say more such raids are likely.

Three days after federal immigration officials swooped down on two North Portland facilities and arrested 167 people, emotions in Portland were still raw and the policy debate still feisty.
Much of the reaction was spurred by Mayor Tom Potter’s response to the raids, which he condemned in favor of a more comprehensive federal solution to immigration issues.
[color=blue]Potter’s office received about 800 e-mails and phone calls immediately after his statement on the raid was released. Many seemed to have been fueled by national talk radio, Potter spokesman John Doussard said, but others came from Oregonians who thought Portland’s mayor had crossed the line.
