Immigration laws exist for a reason | Letter to the editor

Immigration laws exist for a reason | Letter to the editor

A sanctuary city is one that provides shelter to people who are in our country illegally, in violation of federal Immigration Control Enforcement (ICE) law. Actions such as this, including affordable housing, have unintended consequences and attract additional people to our city like magnets and creates a dichotomy that’s never ending.

Our federal government seems willing to deport only those illegals who have a criminal record, a felony or a worse crime. Some consider that to be cruel and irresponsible especially when families are torn apart by deportation. Are not American families accordingly torn apart when a member thereof is convicted of a felony and incarcerated? I fail to see the difference, except the illegal has broken the law twice, once for jumping the border and again upon becoming a felon, while the American has (first offense) broken it only once. However, the illegal gets a one-way ticket home and the American felon can return home when and if his/her sentence is over. No doubt, under some dire circumstances clemency should be granted, but if it isn’t, the family has the option of staying together by all returning to the country of origin — except when the couple is citizens of different countries which further complicates the case.

The federal government over many years has created this problem by failing to enforce immigration law and will now attempt to correct the problem and enforce the law so some leniency could logically be expected.

We either have a country based on the rule of law or we have no country at all, and shame on those, including our governor, who purposely violate the rule of law. Unfortunately that appears to include our city. We can enjoy inclusiveness without giving sanctuary to criminals.

Accolades to our city on the empathy it shows to its illegal residents. However, there must be a better solution to the problem than sanctuary. Responsibility rests with the highest level of violation and that is our governor.

I frequently pass through a town in Texas that has about 5 prisons - most for women. I have a lot of empathy for those women who must leave their children and it is sad to see all the children's playground equipment that is for the children on visiting day.

They made the decision to break the law for whatever reason, knowing they were and there are consequences.

It is sad, though, when you realize some of those women quite possibly committed less crimes, in the terms of monies or harm to others, than did the illegals who just come here and cause economic harm to Americans - yet I don't see a public outcry for those women.

To be fair to some of the people who have such bleeding hearts for illegals, may simply not understand the harm that can be done to others by the presence of illegals.

Once we went to a garage sale outside of a small city that has a lot of illegals (poultry industry). You had to turn off a farm to market road onto a small dirt road for about a quarter mile.

There was a trailer park on the corner where you turned and you could see from the people there, it was filled with illegals.

As we neared the house holding the sale, I noticed there were about 6 small red brick houses - very modest homes. They were all pretty much the same. All had eight foot chain link fences around them and although the lawns were nice and well kept, there were no flowers, shrubs, toys, or lawn furniture. It struck me it might just be some kind of a government housing. It looked pretty sterile.

As we were looking, the two young women holding the sale were discussing having to put everything up for the night. I asked why not cover it as it didn't look like rain.

They explained, they could leave nothing outside their houses - not even their automobiles. The illegals in the park would steal it, or damage it.

They said the reason there were no flowers, shrubs, or whatever is the illegals would climb the fences, dig up the plants, pot them and sell them at flea markets.

They said their children couldn't even ride their bikes on the little dirt road, unless they went with them. One said her son had had 3 bikes stolen. They would attack her son and take his bike.

I asked if the police helped and she said they told her she would have to 'prove' it had happened

In my sheer stupidity, I said I believed I would sell out.

She looked up at me, without pointing our my stupidity, and said, 'Who would buy it?"

Now this was their very modest piece of the American dream and it had been turned into a nightmare by illegals with the protection of local law enforcement.

There are lots of costs to Americans in actual monies, that aren't ever charged as crimes, as well as destroying their quality of life. How do you put a price on not being safe in your own home, your children not being able to play?

As I said, I'm giving some people the benefit of the doubt and thinking they simply don't know the full ramifications of this on people of this country.

The media has filled their heads with all the 'poor little Maria who made the honor roll' or 'poor Jose who mows lawns',, etc., etc.

For those like myself that may be curious. This letter was written in Tukwilar, Washington. Researched location information through the link.
