    Return of the Nativist
    Behind the Republicans’ anti-immigration frenzy.

Tancredoism-a hard line on immigration-is abetted by an absence of Party leadership and by Bush’s unpopularity.

Once upon a time, John McCain was favored to win the Republican nomination. His straight-talking appeal and his cultivation of the Republican Party’s right wing put him first—at least in the early conventional wisdom. Then, last summer, his campaign seemed to spontaneously combust in a puff of fund-raising troubles and staff intrigue. But McCain has slowly made his way back into contention. The usual line is that he has done it by being “the old McCain,â€

[quote]Graham .... “Those politicians that are able to craft a message tailored to the moment but understanding of the long-term consequences to the country and to the Party are the ones that are a blessing. And the ones who live for the moment and don’t think about long-term consequences, demographic changes, over time have proven to have been more of a liability than an asset.â€

The fact is, it's the 'demographic changes' that are troubling. The American people are more aware of them, obviously, than are the politicians.

Sane immigration policies should always be crafted on considerations as to whether new immigrants from various countries will be beneficial to the descendants of the original European pioneers who colonized this continent. The question must always be asked: How will these new immigrants be a benifit to our family/nation, rather than thinking it is our moral obligation to create benefits to new immigrants.

What it come down to is to respect our heritage and ancestors by ensuring their descendants forever continue to have dominion over the nation they created out of the wilderness and to defend the nation from all invaders.

Let's see, nativist, xenophobe, racist, any more words they can use to describe the simple idea of wanting to perserve our country?

"Protectionist" has been used with negative connotations but, quite frankly, I'm proud to be a Protectionist. I equate that with protecting my country from foreign invaders, securing borders, protecting the social, economic and cultural systems of my country and protecting my country's sovergnity.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a TNR alum joined the fatuous pages of America's most pretentious magazine.

I suppose Scott Beauchamp is next in line for a New Yorker gig.

Yea, Zeezil, it's time for a little isolationism..too many outside influences bringing down our country. Our countrymen who would do that to make a dollar are nothing but scum and their influence should land them in jail.
