Authorities arrest 343 in Phoenix gang sweep

PHOENIX (AP) - Law enforcement agencies in Arizona have announced that a months-long operation resulted in hundreds of arrests as authorities targeted violent fugitives with ties to criminal street gangs.

The U.S. Marshals Service says "Operation GRIT" conducted by federal, tribal, state and local law enforcement agencies resulted in 343 arrests and the seizures of 55 guns.

U.S. Marshal for Arizona David Gonzales says the arrests will help reduce crime and he adds that there's a commitment by the agencies involved to continue the effort.

Results of the operation were announced during a news conference Friday in Phoenix. The operation began in early May and ran through early September.

343 arrested seems like a large number, but when compared to the number of gang members that exists, 343 is very miniscule. These type of arrests need to be multiplied, are we willing to fund that effort?

Gang members are arrested every day of the year.

But the media doesn't cover most of them.
