It seems to me that if you’re trying to sneak into a country illegally, the last thing in the world you’d want to do is CALL THE POLICE FOR HELP.

But then again, if you’re stranded halfway up an embankment over the Niagara River, being arrested is probably a better choice than falling to your death.

That’s what happened to a Colombian national over the weekend. In his defense, he didn’t actually call the police….he was just calling for help….but chances are very good that whoever heard him would end up calling the cops. And as it turned out, the person who did hear him happened to be a police officer.

An off-duty Niagara Regional police officer was walking along a trail in Niagara-on-the-Lake Sunday night when he heard the calls coming from down the embankment. He alerted the authorities, and the next thing you know the place was swarming with Canadian cops and firefighters….with help from a big searchlight provided by the US Coast Guard.

A Niagara Parks police officer was lowered down the embankment, where he found the 55-year-old man….clinging to a tree root on a narrow ledge.

It turns out he and two other Colombian nationals crossed the river in a canoe. Police found one of them, a 20-year-old woman…but the third got away.

The would-be immigrants were taken to a hospital and treated for exhaustion and dehydration…no word yet on whether they’ll end up back in the US or Colombia.

Send them to Columbia and bill their government for the search and rescue.
