Cuban Nationals Land at Florida Nuclear Plant

NEW YORK - A group of Cuban nationals who fled their country by boat landed in the cooling canal of a nuclear power plant along Florida's coast on Thanksgiving Day, according to a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission event report issued Friday.

The plant's operations were not disrupted by the incident, according to the report.

The Turkey Point nuclear power plant control room received a call from an individual stating that he was a member of a group of 33 Cuban nationals that had landed in the cooling canal. The group was made up of 29 adults and 4 children.

The plant's control room notified security, who located the Cubans. Security then contacted local law enforcement, the Miami-Dade Police, requesting assistance.

The U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement were in turn notified by Miami-Dade Police.

The Turkey Point station is located in Florida City, in Miami-Dade County, about 25 miles south of Miami.

The plant is owned by FPL Group Inc.

The 693-megawatt Turkey Point 4 reactor remained shut for planned refueling and maintenance, while the 693-MW Unit 3 continued to run at full power on Friday, an NRC report said.

The 2,196-MW station also includes several oil and natural gas-fired units.

One MW powers about 300 homes in Florida.

Come on, out of the blue, they just landed there? Yea, right.

Smugglers dropped them off and made the call. Common do people really think that the Cuban migrants will bring a cellphone with them to make the call or even know where they are? Then to be able to call the control room. Normally you would get the security office. It makes me wonder if it is another staged landing as that is what they do now.
The security at the facility is a joke as the gaurds were caught sleeping on the job earlier this year and FP&L was fined heavily for that.

This is a homeland security issue they should all be deported.

First we hear a remarkable story about how an ordinary couple makes it past the Secret Service into a State dinner and now word comes out of Florida that 33 illegal aliens from Cuba took a boat right up into a supposedly impenetrable nuclear power plant on Thanksgiving. Both incidents raise questions for the Secret Service and DHS as to just how prepared we are for a terrorist attack and also how secure our national power grid is.

The Miami Herald is today reporting that a boat carrying twenty-nine adults and four children called the control room for the Turkey Point Nuclear Power plant in the early afternoon and advised them they had landed their craft in one of the facilities cooling canals and needed assistance. That it was Turkey Point and happened on Thanksgiving is a curious coincidence but plant security are apparently not amused and neither is DHS. They were caught totally unprepared at one of the nations most "secure" nuclear power generating facilities.

The real question is where was the small private army, heavily armed and trained, as the hapless Captain, crew and passengers wandered into the cooling canals through a wildlife refuge wilderness area teaming with crocodiles.

Border Patrol and ICE were called to collect the illegal invaders who since they found terra firma before getting caught can now apply for refugee status.

An investigation is underway and more details will undoubtedly come to light as security at all of our power generating plants will likely be re-examined. Florida Power and Light, who owns the facility, have not yet made a public comment on the security breach.
