EL PASO, Texas — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers posted in the Federal Register on Monday maps of proposed border fencing to be built in parts of South Texas and California.

The maps, part of two notices of intent to file an environmental impact study, detailed the proposed locations of about 70 miles of border fencing in Texas that would stretch from Rio Grande City southeast to Fort Brown, near Brownsville.

The Texas map is similar to one attached to a memo addressed to "Dear Texas Homeland Security Partner," obtained by The Associated Press earlier this year. That map outlined sections of fencing stretching from Presidio, in West Texas, to Brownsville.

The California map shows two stretches of fence, covering about four miles east of San Diego.

Last year President Bush signed the Secure Fence Act requiring the construction of fencing along the 2,000-mile border. The plans have called for about 370 miles of fence and 200 miles of vehicle barriers, including concrete barriers, by the end of 2008.

Maps of potential locations for new fencing in other parts of the border have not been released.
