Prosecutors charge 19 in North Carolina with voter fraud

    SEP. 2, 2020 3:21 PM

GREENSBORO, N.C. —Federal prosecutors in North Carolina announced voter fraud charges Wednesday against 19 non-citizens accused of illegally casting a ballot in 2016.

Each defendant voted in a federal election in 2016, and one defendant also voted in 2018, according to a news release from United States Attorney Matthew G.T. Martin’s office. In some instances, the defendants were also charged with related offenses such as making a false statement.

The news release did not list the defendants’ nationalities or say how their alleged crimes had been uncovered, although it said the matters had been investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, an investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security.

Brief charging documents provided few details about any of the allegations. Many defendants did not have an attorney listed in court records.

The Associated Press attempted to call all attorneys who were listed, reaching only one, who declined comment on his client’s behalf.

A conviction of voting by a non-citizen carries a maximum term of one year imprisonment, a fine not to exceed $100,000, or both.

19 people charged with voter fraud in NC over 2016 votes

    BY ASHAD HAJELA
    SEPTEMBER 02, 2020 10:28 PM

Nineteen people in North Carolina face federal charges of voter fraud over accusations that they voted in 2016 despite not being citizens.

Some were also charged with other crimes. All of them voted in a 2016 federal election and one person also voted in 2018, according to a news release Wednesday from U.S. Attorney Matthew G.T. Martin announcing the August indictments.

Non-citizens cannot register to vote or vote in federal elections.

Holly Springs bans open-carry of guns, deadly weapons in parks, town buildings

The charges include voting by a non-citizen, claim of United States citizenship by non-citizen, false statement in a voter registration application, false statement in an immigration document, false statement in a naturalization proceeding, false statement to a federal agent and procuring naturalization contrary to law.

The people were from all over central North Carolina, including Durham, Greensboro,Winston-Salem and Chapel Hill.

Helen Parsonage, a defense attorney who is representing three of the defendants, told the Associated Press her clients will be “vigorously defended” and that the cases were “clearly timed for partisan political purposes.”

The release from the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina stated the people charged could receive sentences from one to 10 years, and fines from $100,000 to $250,000 depending on the offense.

But that does not necessarily mean they will receive those sentences. The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Robert Higdon, said in a 2018 news release that 19 people charged after illegally voting without U.S. citizenship faced one to six years in prison and a maximum of a $350,000 fine, or even more for those also facing other charges.

U.S. District Court Judge Terrence Boyle had punished five of the 19 people charged with a maximum of a $200 fine as of February 2019, and criticized local election officials, The News & Observer reported.

    VOTER FRAUD IN NORTH CAROLINA

An investigation by the N.C. Board of Elections in 2017 found that 508 voters who cast ballots in 2016 weren’t eligible to vote, the N&O reported. Forty-one votes were identified as being cast by non-citizens. That is only a small percentage of roughly 4.8 million voters who participated, the report from the Board of Elections stated.

Most of the ballots were cast by people who had been convicted of felonies and were serving active felony sentences on probation. In North Carolina, people convicted of felonies can only vote after they complete their sentence, including probation or parole.

The state’s post-2016 audit found that voter fraud is “neither rampant nor non-existent in North Carolina
” and that “ineligible voters are not isolated to one political party or any geographical region of the state,” The News & Observer reported in a fact-check last year.

If they are not citizens, DHS & ICE need to deport all 19. And if the families are here illegally, deport them all too

These foreigners come here, disrespect our country and our laws, and that is foreign interference in our elections.

Strip them of the privilege to ever come back.
ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL

19 aliens charged with voter fraud in North Carolina following ICE investigation

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Nineteen foreign nationals face federal charges in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina for illegally voting in the 2016 federal elections, according to federal charges publicly announced on Wednesday. These charges are the latest indictments to result from an ongoing years-long federal criminal investigation being conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Raleigh office.

A federal grand jury in Wilmington charged seven foreign nationals on August 31 on federal felony charges including falsely claiming U.S. citizenship or making false statements on voter registration application, and with misdemeanor charges of unlawfully casting ballots in the 2016 presidential election. Non-citizens are not eligible to register to vote or to vote in federal elections under U.S. law.

If convicted, these individuals face maximum penalties of six years in federal prison, a $350,000 fine, and a term of supervised release.

An additional 12 foreign nationals were charged in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina on August 13 with misdemeanor charges for unlawfully casting ballots in the 2016 presidential election.

If convicted, these individuals face a maximum term of one-year imprisonment, a fine not to exceed $100,000, or both.

The charges and allegations contained in the indictments are merely accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The case is being prosecuted federally by the office of United States Attorney Matthew G.T. Martin for the Middle District of North Carolina.

These most-recent indictments stem from an ongoing HSI investigation that previously resulted in separate indictments in the Eastern District of North Carolina in August 2018.
