Public Feedback About Immigrant Tuition Bill Turns Negative

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The debate over a bill before the N.C. General Assembly that would give children of illegal immigrants in-state college tuition has soared to a new level.

That legislation has upset some people, and public feedback now includes hate mail.

Soon after former Gov. Jim Hunt stood with lawmakers to support the legislation, the raw emotion poured out.

When the pressure came for state legislators to withdraw their support from the proposed bill, Rep. Jeff Barnhart, R-Cabarrus County, watched nine of his colleagues take their names off the controversial legislation.

"I've gotten some very ugly language, some racial slurs, bigoted e-mail -- which are very disappointing," Barnhart said. "I can honestly understand the frustration. All we're saying is that we need to look at the problem. We need constructive dialogue."

On its Web site, a Latino advocacy group also calls for tolerant dialogue.

El Pueblo posted attacks from some of its extreme opposition -- some comments so aggressive that Raleigh police were called in to check on El Pueblo security. Now, there's a flurry of bills that seek to take away more rights for illegal immigrants and tighten enforcement in North Carolina.

One would give local law enforcement more power to enforce immigration laws.

Another urges the U.S. Congress to formally declare English the nation's official language.

The backers clearly oppose tuition breaks for undocumented families.

"This bill may not be the answer, but it's time we start thinking about answers because we've got problems we've got to deal with," said Barnhart.

Despite the backlash, Hunt said Thursday that he is still 100 percent behind the bill.

"Some of the people have been pretty ugly, but other people have continuing concerns about that," Hunt said. "We need to keep our eye on the ball -- what's the right thing to do and what's the smart thing to do economically -- so we can build the economy of North Carolina."

Hunt calls it the fair thing to do for children.

According to the most recent statistics from El Pueblo, Latinos account for more than 95 percent of migrant farm workers in North Carolina. They are also more than half of the workers at meat processing plants.

Duplin County is the most heavily populated county of immigrants. Nearly 17.5 percent of the population is Hispanic.

Tolerant dialogue? BAWAHAHAHAHA they sure as heck aren't tolerant of anyone who doesn't kowtow to their agenda.

So who's fault was it that North Carolinas economy went down hill in the first place? I fail to see how rewarding lawbreakers who have no legal right to be in this country with taxpayer funded benefits is great for the economy. This is just going to make North Carolina an even bigger haven for the illegal alien invasion. Why don't these stupid politicans see this?

Fair? Fair? What about being fair to the taxpaying citizens of your state that clearly 100 percent without a doubt don't want this pushed on them? What about being fair to the children of your state and this country who are about to be denied a rightful slot in college because you Mr Hunt decided that kowtowing to Mexican interest was far more important than kowtowing to the interest of your constituents who voted you into office? What do you have to say to those same children who your about to deny a slot in college? That lawbreakers are more deserving of being sent to college then those who obey the laws and work hard to get a chance at being sent to an institution of higher learning. Is that the message you want to send? I think you sir need to get your priorities straight because I'm sure nobody voted for you to put Mexican interest ahead of the interest of your own constituents.

NC voters better remember this when it comes time to vote this clown out of office.

The economy in North Carolina is mixed. The metro areas of Charlotte, (largest city); Raleigh (state capital); and Durham (home to University of North Carolina and the Research Triangle Park, 3rd largest high tech corporate center in United States) have 5.5%; 4.5% and 4.5% unemployment respectively as of Feb 05. Rural Areas of the state are the ones with the highest unemployment concerns. Situations have worsened during the past 2 years, dramatically, despite new construction, lots of new development.

None of this is helping keep Americans employed here because almost all the new jobs that the economic recovery and growth (population) are generating in non-manufacturing sectors are going to illegal aliens.

I see now that this was planned. That's why the Governor pushed the driver's license bill. We were asleep. Not paying attention. Dealing with the recession.....

Governor Hunt was a 4 term Governor before the current Governor. A political machine was created during those 16 years. He knows many people and until now was widely respected.

The budget for the state was in a shambles and when Easley took over Easley had to raise taxes to straighten out the budget.

Soon after the recession came and the things a state needs to do to promote real economic development are difficult. North Carolina has been very aggressive on incentives to bring companies to North Carolina. But not at a fast enough pace to keep up with the job loss primarily because the new jobs in retail, service and construction are going to illegal aliens.

There is NOTHING about illegal immigration that benefits any state's economy when you have a surplus as we do of American Workers. Hunt knows that but for some reason is claiming the opposite when he speaks with the Press.

Why?

He claimed in a press interview that he is a "globalist". So, now we know, he is selling out North Carolina to position certain interests here for some part of the power control, when CAFTA goes through, but the outcome will NOT be economic development opportunities for the people of North Carolina--it will be more job loss.

Are these companies that are going into NC bringing in Tech workers, etc from other countries? If they are bringing in outsiders &/or outsourcing.........no way on God's green earth will that help the S. Carolinians!

That's a 2 pronged whamy for you guys just as it is in other states.

2ndamendsis--yes, many foreign nationals work in the RTP with so-called "special technical expertise". Every time you see a new research project, the person heading and making the big dollar income is a foreign national. Also, this year, the Congress has already increased the number of these high paid professionals allowed in to the United States. What is afoot will destroy North Carolina and push it into a welfare state for the middle and lower income Americans and then to the top displacing American Engineers and Doctors and Ph. Ds with foreign nationals. That is my belief of the consequences of what is happening with the policies on both illegal and legal immigration.
