PHOENIX -- Deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff's office said a Chinese national was one of nine undocumented immigrants taken into custody Monday during a traffic stop.

Maricopa County sheriff's spokesman Brian Lee said deputies discovered the undocumented immigrants when they made a traffic stop along Interstate 17 near Pioneer road about 8:30 p.m.

Lee said a female Chinese national was among the nine people arrested on suspicion of being in the country without the proper documentation.

Lee said the woman is from Sichuan, China. She was turned over to customs officials.

Investigators determined that the majority of the group was being smuggled to various locations back east including New York, Pennsylvania and Atlanta, said Lee.

"Despite the fact that certain elected officials in Arizona struck down new immigration policies which would have helped combat illegal immigration, I will continue to enforce all state and federal immigration laws," Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

Arpaio said his deputies will be,"conducting a massive operation very soon targeting the increasing problem of illegal human and drug trafficking within Maricopa County."
