DESERT CENTER, Calif. - The Border Patrol has rescued 9 suspected illegal immigrants who called 911 in the sweltering Southern California desert.

On Tuesday afternoon, Border Patrol agents from the El Centro Sector received a 911 call from the California Highway Patrol about a distress call from a group of 9 people in the desert near Salton City, Calif.

The group made the call from a cell phone, which determined their GPS coordinates.

Agents arrived and met 9 severely dehydrated individuals. They were treated for injuries and dehydration and then transported to nearby hospitals for advanced medical care.

The group was later determined to be Mexican citizens who had crossed the border illegally. Record checks revealed that one suspect had an outstanding warrant and two others had extensive criminal history.

The warrant suspect was turned over to the Indio Police Department, and the two criminal aliens are pending federal prosecution.

The temperature at the time was nearly 110 degrees.
