(CNSNews.com) - "I don't care what the polls show. We know that they don't work," Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told a news conference on Tuesday.
While predicting the outcome of various races, Reid said an illegal alien friend of his is "more of a Nevadan" than the Republican U.S. senator from that state.
"I know Nevada as well as I know any place in the world or any -- and that's an understatement," Reid said. "Trump is going to lose Nevada and (Sen.) Joe Heck deservedly is going to lose the Senate race because of his being a pawn for Donald Trump."
Reid mentioned Astrid Silva from Las Vegas, whom he described as the "face of the DREAMers." The young woman became a pen-pal of Reid's, and her immigration advocacy helped her land a speaking slot at the Democratic National Convention in July.
Reid told reporters, "She came across the river, the Rio Grande, with her rosary beads, a little doll in her arms, with her mom. She has only known Nevada as her home. And I said there and I believe it. She's more of a Nevadan by far than Heck, who moved there somewhat late in life."
Heck's official biography says he was born in New York, raised in Pennsylvania, and moved to Southern Nevada in 1992, 24 years ago.
Press reports said Silva, now 28, crossed into the U.S. from Mexico when she was four years old -- 24 years ago.
