Longtime, stable Postville workers picked up in the May immigration raid at the Agriprocessors meatpacking plant are being replaced by young, single men who are more likely to cause problems and tension in town, a local pastor said today.

Participants in the call also wondered aloud why plant owners and managers have faced no charges, leaving the immigrant workers and the community to face the consequences.
I'd like to know too. Nothing is going to change until they face the full brunt as well. Maybe they should have to pay the cost of deportation coz a lousy fine isn't going to deter much especially when they have serious money to drag this out for as long as they want.

I mean to me this is a prime shot for the ACLU or whatever to step in if they truely want to stop worker exploitation. No matter WHO it is. But it seems that is minor in their list compared to just making everyone legal. As if businesses won't find yet another loophole to exploit if they aren't stopped. Or another group of people.

The new, itinerant employees are replacing hundreds of immigrant workers who were arrested or fled after the raid. Many of those people were Guatemalan or Mexican immigrants who had been in town for years and had settled into peaceful family lives, Brackett said.
And what happens when the children in those "peaceful" families grow up into adolescents? Wouldn't that amount to the same thing: young men---and fertile young women--with not much else to do in a small, hot Midwestern town.

    Rev. Brackett---you're a dimwit.
