Conway Mocks Pelosi’s Decision to ‘Grandstand and Showboat’ on DACA

White House counselor questions Democrat's refusal to support bipartisan budget deal without commitment to immigration fix

by Kathryn Blackhurst | Updated 08 Feb 2018 at 1:45 PM

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway ripped House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) Thursday on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” for her decision to “grandstand and showboat for all the world to see” while rejecting the bipartisan budget deal on the House floor Wednesday.

“How about that Nancy Pelosi yesterday? What was that?” Conway said. “By the way, serious leaders negotiate behind closed doors. They don’t need to grandstand and showboat for all the world to see.”

Pelosi broke a House record for the longest speech given since 1909 when she spoke on the floor for eight hours straight. During her speech, Pelosi pleaded with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to pledge to bring a vote to the House floor on the fate of illegal immigrants qualifying under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Pelosi refused to support the bipartisan budget deal Ryan, Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) agreed to earlier Wednesday unless Ryan committed to bringing up the DACA amnesty vote.

"Fox & Friends" co-host Steve Doocy noted that Pelosi "was essentially filibustering something that she was in on negotiating."

Conway agreed, "that's right," noting that she wasn't sure "what [Pelosi] got out of it except a lot of criticism from Democratic members today and also from dreamers."

"I read a bunch of quotes today in the — in the news accounts that they are not sure what [Pelosi] got for that, and that they are very disappointed," Conway noted.

Democrats' progressive base was enraged when Democratic lawmakers caved after bringing about a government shutdown in January. Although Democrats initially claimed they wouldn't support any budget deal without a vote on DACA amnesty, they ultimately got on board with the expectation of a DACA and immigration reform vote in February.

"[Pelosi] said she demanded certain things and walked away with none of them," Conway said. "It's the president who's been very clear about the four principles he expects from meaningful immigration reform. It's the wall, it's a resolution for the DACA recipients, it's the end of the visa lottery system, and certainly an end to chain migration."

"So what is she putting on the table? Eight hours on one issue and didn't get anything done," Conway added.

Despite Pelosi's insistence that she and some other House Democrats wouldn't vote in favor of the budget deal, Ryan believes he has the votes to pass it. Both the Senate and the House will vote on the legislation later Thursday.
