Rep. Adam Kinzinger: Obama Likely to Send National Guard to Border

President Barack Obama will likely have to send National Guard troops to the southern U.S. border to assist Border Patrol agents with the influx of illegal immigrants crossing into the country, said Rep. Adam Kinzinger.

"At the end of the day, the president's probably, if he really wants to solve the border crisis, at least in the short term, is probably going to have to deploy National Guard soldiers to alleviate what the Border Patrol's having to do," the Illinois Republican told "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday.

Kinzinger said the Obama administration needs to ensure that the Department of Defense has "all of the resources it needs" to handle the border crisis, since cuts have been made to the military's budget. He said the military is already "carrying a share of this burden" because of the thousands of illegal immigrants who are being housed at bases.

The military, through the United States Southern Command, is also playing an active role in combating "drug trafficking and narcoterrorism" in Central and South America, seen to be at the heart of the border surge, Kinzinger said, adding it should be properly funded, as well.

"SOUTHCOM needs to be well resourced to be able to combat the front end of why we're seeing a lot of these kids come up here to the border," he said.

Drug cartels are sensing an opportunity in the crisis, Kinzinger said, because they have "figured out that, not only can they make money on bringing children up here, but they can also use that distraction, and the Border Patrol being distracted by the number of children, to put more drugs over the border."

A thoughtful President would have placed the National Guard on the border in January, just prior to advertising for "sponsors." That may heave discouraged a part of this problem.

Again, recognizing consequences before acting is a thing that the federal government does not have a clue about how to do.

In the past putting the National Guard on the border would have prevented people who didn't want to get caught from crossing.

These people want to get caught.

Putting more people on the border now only means that the illegal aliens won't have to walk so far to find someone to turn themselves over to.

If they don't take them from the border to the airport for a flight home they get to stay.
    NO AMNESTY

Don't reward the criminal actions of millions of illegal aliens by giving them citizenship.

I agree with your point, JohmDoe2, however the Border Patrol has mentioned that the people that do not want to get caught are making it across because they ar busy babysitting! We should be very concerned about that too, IMO.

National Guard won't make a difference until they are given the authority to turn back illegal aliens by any means necessary. As long as Bord Patrol and NG would just stand by the side handing out pamphlets directing illegals where to get freebies and how nothing will change. But the minute you put NG on the border locked and loaded to treat it as a foreign invasion, as soon as the first shot is fired the inflow will slow drastically. But until there is a real threat of loss with little chance of gain why would they stop or be deterred? Same thing with any criminal, the punishment needs to be strict enough to deter most.

Locked and loaded is how Bush should have sent the NG while he was president, since Reagan we seem to have an abundance of acting presidents. We are 28 years late defending our borders. but we go all over the world to defend others borders. that is not understandable or acceptable.
