Rep. Barton to offer bill for kids in U.S. illegally to become cititzens

Rep. Joe Barton said Friday that he was close to introducing a sweeping proposal to overhaul the nation’s immigration system.

The plan will include a path to citizenship for children in the country illegally and a mechanism to give legal status to adults who are in the country illegally but have not committed other crimes.

Barton, R-Arlington, said his bill would be ready in a month to six weeks.

“If it were to become law, it would solve the problem,” Barton said during a recording of Lone Star Politics, which airs at 8:40 a.m. Sunday on KXAS-TV (NBC5).

Barton said his plan would put a heavy emphasis on border security, which could help mollify the most conservative Republicans in Congress.

But he said that “minor children” would get a path to citizenship and that there would be an effective guest worker program for immigrants with jobs. And Barton would give adults in the country illegally a chance to gain legal status, but not citizenship.

“If the only illegal act they committed was coming in the country without proper documentation, we put them on a path to legalization, not citizenship,” Barton said.

Many Republicans are wary of any kind of new citizenship or legal status for those in the country illegally, saying it amounts to amnesty. A sweeping measure to allow a path to citizenship has passed the Senate.

Barton said he would have support for his plan from Republicans and Democrats. But he acknowledged it would face significant opposition in his own party.

He said it was time Republicans took a different approach to the issue, noting that his 8-year-old son attended a school where half the students are Hispanic, including his two best friends.

“They are Americans, and we need to acknowledge that and find a way, to those that wish to be a part of the American dream for opportunity, to make them legal.” Barton said.

The lawmaker said being on the wrong side of the issue could hurt Republicans in future elections.

“Republicans need to start talking about it,” he said. “I’m a part of the majority party in the largest state that’s still Republican, and I want to keep it that way.”

This is not law, this is not compassion, it is not immigration policy, it is a stab in the heart of America. It is planned destruction of our country. You are quickly becoming a foreigner in your own country and this low life piece of garbage knows it, and he doesn't give a damn because he thinks it is politically expedient. Or is it that Zuckerberg had a secret appointment with him and promised huge contributions to his reelection campaign and a soft make work job big salary job if he looses reelection?

Patriots I know you are tired. I am tired, but remember amnesty is irreversible, it is death for all that is good in American and the end to any hope for a good life for your children and loved ones. Send more of the money you can't afford to the good guys' campaigns and get back on the phones and spend at least two hours a day calling, if in the evening leave a message on the phone answering machines.

And send more $$ to ALIPAC. These people more than anyone I know of deserve to get lots of $$$.

It's disgusting that these clowns show so little regard for the rule of law!

They are NOT Americans! They are illegal and should be deported along with their parents. No one becomes a citizen by being brought over the border and no one should be rewarded for it. We have proper channels for making people legal citizens. Enforce existing laws and get those illegals back to their own country where they belong.

I couldn't agree more!!!! Well said!!!!!!
Before I was disabled, I had worked for 8 years along side illegals who spoke Spanish all the time. Every day I felt as if I left my own Country. When that place closed down and I was searching for a job, I was shocked that some companies required you to speak Spanish in order to get hired! I asked one company why that was and their response was that most of their employees spoke Spanish. No American should be forced to speak a foreign language in their own Country for a job that has nothing to do with international business.

In one town I saw huge areas where one business after another had all signs in Spanish and not a word of English! Restaurants, dry cleaners etc. There was graffiti everywhere and trash. It was a nightmare to see this!

This invasion is changing the America we once knew and loved.

This will only work if ID theft, welfare fraud and tax evasion are forgiven. These are laws that American citizens are prosecuted for and illegals should not get a free pass. JMO

You're so right but these bleeding hearts will forgive them of these crimes as they were necessary under the circumstances. :twisted: :evil:
