WASHINGTON–Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.) said at a recent town hall in his central Illinois district that he supports a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants–after certain pre-conditions are met.
The House left last week for a five-week summer break without taking up immigration measures; the Senate passed a comprehensive immigration overhaul bill in June on a 68-32 vote. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) voted yes.
Schock said that after the border is secured, illegal immigrants who come forward, pay back taxes, have violated no laws should go on a probationary period and “then they can apply for citizenship and go to the back of the line.”
I think that Schock is the first GOP Illinois House member to support a path to citizenship, a subject of much debate within the GOP.
