Report: Neb. immigrants pay $154M in taxes in 2006

Report: Neb. immigrants pay $154M in taxes in 2006

    Associated Press - October 15, 2008 4:35 PM ET

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A new study on the financial impact of immigrants says foreign-born people paid about $154 million in 2006 in Nebraska property, income, sales and gasoline taxes.

The report from the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Office of Latino and Latin American Studies says Nebraska immigrants' contributions to the economy are significant.

Immigrants, meanwhile, cost the state government nearly $145 million in food stamps, public assistance, health and educational expenditures in 2006.

In 2006, Nebraska had nearly 100,000 foreign-born residents. That's more than 5% of the total state population.

Report: Immigrants inject billions into Neb. economy

    Associated Press - October 15, 2008 2:15 AM ET

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A new study whose findings were to be released today says immigrants add $1.6 billion annually in spending to the state's economy and fill a critical role in the workforce.

The report from the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Office of Latino and Latin American Studies is believed to be the first statewide quantitative assessment of the contributions of Nebraska immigrants.

The study says immigrants created about 12,000 jobs across all sectors of the state's economy in 2006.

The study finds the loss of the foreign-born workforce could cost the state $13.5 billion and thousands of jobs.

Report: Loss of immigrants could devastate Neb. economy

    Associated Press - October 15, 2008 2:15 AM ET

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A new report says the loss of immigrants in the workforce would devastate the state's economy.

Communities whose main industries depend on an influx of a new and young labor force and a generation of children willing to stay in those communities would be especially hard hit.

That's according to a new report released today by the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Office of Latino and Latin American Studies.

Foreign-born people make up more than 5% of the state's population. But immigrants represent a little more than 4% of the public sector costs to the state.

Available data didn't allow the report's authors to differentiate between the economic impact of illegal versus legal immigrants.

    More pro-illegal spin.

If no one can even get an accurate count on how many are here, how do they get an accurate count of how much they supposedly "contribute"

Hold the phone!!! They can tell how much "immigrants" paid in GASOLINE tax, but can't tell which of these immigrants are legal or not? What do they do? Ask if someone is an immigrant at the gas pumps? HILARIOUS!!!!

Then this study is completely USELESS. LEGAL immigrants contribute, ILLEGAL aliens do not.[/quote]

Which is the correct amount? $154M or $1.6B?

While reading this I thought they all came out of the shadows and admitted they are here illegally. Then a brief comment, like btw, the study does not differentiate between legal and illegal. Useless spin imo.

I wonder if those Nebraska geniuses know the difference between immigrant, Latino, Hispanic and illegal alien. Seems they do not. I'd bet my hat their illegal aliens are no different from most of the other 20 million illegal aliens. They pay no income tax, buy neither hospital nor auto insurance, avail their children of free breakfast, lunch, transportation, school fees and transportation, use WIC, welfare, food stamps and all the rest. If they have 100,000 immigrants, they probably have about 30,000 illegal aliens. And if only 5,000 are school aged, government education alone would account for $50 million of taxpayer money. sheesh.
