ICE arrests 17 men after Amsterdam police traffic stop

AMSTERDAM - ICE arrested 17 undocumented men after a traffic stop by Amsterdam city police. Immigration attorneys said the number arrested a week ago reflects an increase nationwide and cooperation between immigration officials and local law enforcement in the Capital Region.

Camille Mackler, director of Immigration Legal Policy at the New York Immigration Coalition, said that arrests as a result of traffic stops or calls from citizens have become more common in upstate New York and along the northern U.S. border.

An Amsterdam police patrol officer pulled over a white Chevrolet work van near Knights Inn motel along Route 5S at 3 p.m. on Aug. 21, according to the police report.

Police Sgt. Carl Rust said the officer spotted the driver drinking beer in a bottle through a cracked windshield of the van carrying 18 men. There were some beer bottles on board, and several of the men didn't have proper identification. The officer alerted ICE, which arrived in 30 minutes.

Regional ICE spokesman Khaalid Walls said the 17 men arrested, are from Mexico and Honduras and range in age from 19 to 58. They were detained in Albany County Jail, where immigration attorneys interviewed them in the 24 hours after their arrests.

Mackler, who oversees the volunteer attorneys, said the men were returning home from construction work. Some had lived in New York for years, others just a few months.

ICE arrests nationwide increased from 110,000 in fiscal year 2016 to almost 150,000 in last year 2017. In the most recent data from the end of 2017, arrests in upstate New York hovered around 100 a month.

Rust couldn't provide data on how frequently his department calls Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but he said "we've used them quite often" in the past three years.

Mackler said arrests as the result of police calls are concerning for her and other immigration attorneys.

"It's creating a much wider dragnet for immigrants. It fosters distrust between local communities and law enforcement and that's very dangerous," Mackler said. "It gives people, especially individuals of color, it gives them more reason to not come forward to the police if they witness crime."

Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said all 17 men were still detained as of Monday, awaiting removal proceedings. The jail received an influx of 330 migrants transferred from the southern border this summer. Even though those detainees are now being transferred to other facilities, local arrests continue to fill the jail.

Put them in Federal Tent City...serve time and deport them!

Get the OUT of the local and state jurisdiction, out of their courts and out of their jails!

PUT THEM ON FEDERAL LAND WITH A PANEL OF FEDERAL JUDGES TO SPEED UP THESE CASES AND THEN BOOT THEM OUT!
ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL
