WILSONVILLE -- A Mexican national deported in 2012 after serving a prison sentence for felony sex crimes was re-arrested in Wilsonville Thursday.

Victor Ozuna Bernal, 35, was booked into the Clackamas County Jail and later was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Sgt. Dan Kraus, West Linn Police Departmentspokesman, said a patrol officer stopped a vehicle for a suspected traffic violation Thursday. During a computer check, the officer realized the driver – Ozuna Bernal – previously had been deported.

According to court records, Ozuna Bernal was convicted in Nebraska in 2007 for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl. He served a five-year prison sentence and was deported to Mexico.

"We don't know how he got back into the U.S.," Kraus said. "But he had no legal right to be here."

The officer re-arrested Ozuna Bernal for failing to register as sex offender. Jail officials then contacted ICE agents, who have begun deportation proceedings.

Kraus said Ozuna Bernal apparently had been living in Woodburn for the past year.

Nebraska used to have a death penalty for such a crime. Then bleeding hearts started claiming that they could be rehabilitated. One way or another, children were safer the old way!
